TIP: Don't Rely Too Much On That 'Miles-To-Empty' Warning For Gas

AAA says don’t rely too much on that “miles-to-empty” warning in your car. Researchers tested the accuracy of these systems and found the estimates vary over shorter trips or are dependent on the consistency of things that affect gas mileage, like speed and acceleration. And the vehicle error varied greatly, ranging from -6.4% to 2.8%. A survey by AAA found that 74% of drivers say they use their "miles-to-empty" display to decide when to get gas.

Parents Are Sharing Their Funniest "Tooth Fairy" Stories

Reddit user u/ve-gay-n decided to ask, "'Tooth fairies:' how do you do it without waking the kiddos? Any funny stories?" Here are some replies: "Once, one of my kids lost a tooth at night, and we didn’t have anything smaller than a $20, so we told him that means he lost a super special tooth. The other parents in his class heard about it and were annoyed with us because their kids then thought it was the going rate. When my middle kid got money for his first tooth, he tried really hard to loosen another to make a quick buck. He swallowed it at lunch and was so upset. We paid him anyway and told him the tooth fairy could use magic to get it." —u/negcap "I tell them the tooth fairy doesn’t do house visits right now due to COVID. They have to give me the teeth so I can mail them in and get the deposit electronically." —u/adairtd "Once, my son got the bright idea to con the tooth fairy. He made Play-Doh teeth and left them. As he was totally naive about this, he shared his plan with me. However, the fake teeth only yielded fake money — chocolate coins in gold-colored foil! He anticipated untold riches!" —u/Bananapeel62 "When my brother accidentally swallowed his tooth, the tooth fairy taped his money to the toilet." —u/KodiakBear413 "My son refused to let Santa, the Easter Bunny, or the tooth fairy in the house. He would cry and get so nervous and anxious. The tooth fairy left the money in the mailbox. I still have his little letters that said, 'Dear Santa, I love you. Please don’t come inside my house.' Santa had to leave presents on the porch. Easter Bunny left the basket on the porch." —u/SandyInStLouis "One time, my daughter’s tooth fell out, and the tooth fairy completely forgot that night. She was upset, but her mom explained that, sometimes, the tooth fairy gets busy and she will come the next night — which will all be good because she will pay an extra 50 cents to make up for being late. This satisfied my daughter. About three months later, my daughter announces that she lost another tooth a month ago, that it had been under her pillow for a month, and the tooth fairy clearly owes her $15." —u/taxdude1966 "One of mine lost a tooth on Christmas Eve. We told her if the tooth fairy and Santa bumped into each other, we would all be sucked into an alternative dimension, so she had to stay quiet in bed no matter what." —u/CataractsOfSamsMum "I do it at bedtime. We listen to a chapter of an audiobook, and she's usually passed out in five minutes with my arm under her pillow. She wakes up in the morning with a bank transaction receipt from the National Bank of Fairies and a credit to her bank account. She also gets a little zip pouch with a new toothbrush and the horrible smelling bubblegum mouthwash she likes." —u/denimuprising "The last time I snuck money under their pillow, my 'snoring' child grabbed my arm and screamed, 'Aa-ha! BUSTED!' in my face, scaring the sh*t out of me. I, in turn, threatened to use his tooth to put a curse on him." —u/BuzzAllWin "My son tried to con the tooth fairy by cutting out triangles of white felt and passing them off as crocodile teeth." —u/taxdude1966

OPINION: "Adult Picky Eaters Are Insufferable And Deserve Public Scorn & Shaming"

Reddit user u/Senepicmar wrote: "Adult picky eaters are insufferable and deserve public scorn & shaming" "..I can absolutely understand not enjoying some foods here and there, that's normal. But I can't believe the number of people who say they can only eat vegetables if they're fried, must have a certain spice, must not have something simple like pepper, or won't try anything outside of their immediate food circle. "If you're lucky enough to get a good meal and as long as you don't have an allergy or an actual restriction, be polite and enjoy it. Replies include: "I have a friend who said, and I quote, "I can't drink water it makes me gag". Coca-cola, not a problem. Water, triggers gag reflex." "My ex said he would vomit if he ate food with milk in it. Not just obvious things like custard but hidden milk in bread or cake. If you didn't tell him though, then no vomiting." "Had a supervisor that if a vegetable even touched his food he wouldn’t eat it. If we all went in on pizza we would always get a supreme, because he wouldn’t even pick the onions and peppers off. He just wouldn’t partake." "A guy I know will literally pick the peas out of a mutton curry pie.. Like he will pull the pie apart, pick the peas out, then eat the pie (I swear there are no more than 20 to 30 peas in the entire pie)." "I know people that would always order chicken tenders when they went to a new restaurant. New Mexican place? Guess I’ll get chicken tenders!"

Simone Biles Withdraws From Gymnastics Olympics Final (Or All-Around Competition) For Her Mental Health

Gymnast Simone Biles decided to withdraw from the team event at the Olympics. On Tuesday, Biles looked shaky in her vault routine—a rarity for her—then spoke to a team doctor and exited. While USA Gymnastics cited a "medical issue," Simone clarified that it wasn't a physical injury. She said, “I just felt like it would be a little bit better to take a back seat and work on my mindfulness.” Simone said, "I knew that the girls would do an absolutely great job, and I didn't want to risk the team a medal for my screwups, because they've worked way too hard for that. So I just decided that those girls need to go and do the rest of the competition.” She returned a few minutes later, but only to cheer on her teammates. The team settled for a silver medal. Simone will not compete in Thursday’s individual all-around competition. She will be evaluated daily to see if she will participate in the event finals next week. MORE: Former Team USA gymnasts are now speaking out in support of her decision. Aly Raisman, Biles' former teammate in the 2016 Olympics, said, "I know that all of these athletes dream of this moment for their whole entire lives, and I'm just completely devastated. I am obviously so worried and just hoping that Simone is OK.” Aly added that she worried about the "mental impact" that the stress has had on Biles. Sarah Hirshland, CEO of the US Olympic & Paralympic Committee, tweeted, "You’ve made us so proud. Proud of who you are as a person, teammate and athlete. We applaud your decision to prioritize your mental wellness over all else, and offer you the full support and resources of our Team USA community as you navigate the journey ahead.”

CDC Wants Masks Back On, Inside, Even for the Vaccinated Folks-- Who Could Be Infecting Others

Back in May, the CDC told fully vaccinated people they could safely take off their masks in most indoor places. The new advice: Put them back on. According to the CDC, while vaccinated people aren't likely to become seriously ill, they can still catch the delta variant and pass it on. The agency’s new recommendation: people vaccinated against the coronavirus should resume wearing masks in public indoor spaces in parts of the country where the virus is surging. The agency also called for universal masking for teachers, staff, students and visitors in schools, regardless of vaccination status and community transmission of the virus. With additional precautions, schools nonetheless should return to in-person learning in the fall. The C.D.C. said Americans should resume wearing masks in areas where there are more than 50 new infections per 100,000 residents over the previous seven days, or more than 8 percent of tests are positive for infection over that period.
